Batesville and Milan Football Teams Donate $25,000 to “Turnover Hunger”

Batesville High School and Milan High School varsity football teams forced a combined 53 turnovers during the 2023 football season to raise $32,825 to Turnover Hunger among Ripley County’s elementary school children. On December 5th, the football teams came together to jointly present $5,000 to each of the following schools, Batesville Primary School, Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School, Milan Elementary School, South Ripley Elementary School, and Sunman Elementary School.  This funding will support the Weekend Backsack Program for one semester. The remainder of the funds were placed into the Turnover Hunger Endowment Fund for the sustainability of the Turnover Hunger Program.

Turnover Hunger is an initiative of the Ripley County Community Foundation that partners with local football teams in their efforts to give back to their communities.  The 2023 football season was dedicated to raising funds to support the Weekend Backsack Program.  The Weekend Backsack Program sends a backpack of kid friendly food home with elementary school students on the weekends and school breaks.

There are around 600 elementary children in Ripley County are experiencing food insecurity.  “Milan Elementary’s Weekend BackPack Pals program currently serves 61 of our most vulnerable students. It is so heart-warming for me to lead this program at school. I get to witness the community support from the Turnover Hunger Program. I also get to witness the faces of the students when they receive their bags for the weekend. Please know that the donations are helping us to meet the basic needs of our students. Thank you for helping students at Milan Elementary and the other schools in Ripley County.” stated Michelle McKittrick, Milan Elementary School Counselor
