The Ripley County Community Foundation, Inc., through its Ripley Youth Outreach program, proudly hosted the 7th annual Chalktoberfest on Saturday, September 19, 2026, during Osgood’s Bricktoberfest. This year’s event brought together middle school, high school, and adult artists, along with community members, to celebrate creativity, culture, and connection through the arts.
Celebrating America’s 250th Through Art
Chalktoberfest is a chalk art competition that showcases local talent who are challenged to create a mural based upon a theme. The event provides artists of all ages with an opportunity to share their talents while transforming public spaces into colorful works of art that inspire conversation and bring people together.
This year’s theme, “America’s 250th,” invited artists to honor the nation’s semiquincentennial by depicting historic landmarks, patriotic symbols, and representations of the values and freedoms that define the American experience. Nine participants transformed South Walnut Street into a colorful celebration of American history, heritage, and civic pride through their vibrant chalk murals.
The theme was selected to encourage participants and spectators alike to reflect on the significance of America’s 250th anniversary and the role each generation plays in preserving the freedoms and opportunities enjoyed today. Through art, participants explored the stories, symbols, and ideals that have shaped our nation and continue to influence our communities.
“As our nation celebrates its 250th anniversary, we felt it was important to create an opportunity for the community to reflect on the principles, freedoms, and responsibilities that have shaped America,” said Amy Streator, Executive Director of the Ripley County Community Foundation. “Chalktoberfest provided a unique way to celebrate our country’s history while supporting one of our key pillars of impact, education. We hope that the murals created at Chalktoberfest spark meaningful conversations about our nation’s past, present, and future.”
The event’s focus on America’s 250th also aligns with the Community Foundation’s commitment to education and complements the mission of Wreaths Across Ripley County, which encourages citizens to remember, honor, and teach by recognizing the sacrifices made to preserve the freedoms Americans enjoy today.
Recognizing Outstanding Artists
A panel of judges, including local artists and community members, had the challenging task of selecting winners from among the outstanding entries. Prizes were awarded to the top three artists in each division:
Adult Division
1st Place – Megan Bauer
Bauer’s award-winning mural showcased the American Cowboy, a timeless symbol of independence, resilience, and the pioneering spirit that helped shape the nation’s history.
2nd Place – Michael Moffitt
Moffitt’s mural focused on the Statue of Liberty’s torch, one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols of freedom and hope.
3rd Place – Heather Reichert
Reichert’s mural celebrated America “from sea to shining sea,” depicting the diverse landscapes that stretch across the country.
High School Division
1st Place – Bella Weberding
Weberding’s mural featured the Bald Eagle, the national bird and enduring emblem of freedom, strength, and courage.
2nd Place – Allie Peetz
Peetz commemorated the nation’s milestone birthday with a creative mural featuring a patriotic birthday cake celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.
3rd Place – Carmen Camarena
Camarena’s mural honored the American Soldier, recognizing the dedication, sacrifice, and service of the men and women who have defended the nation’s freedoms throughout its history.
Middle School Division
1st Place – Lucy Yatsko
Yatsko’s mural prominently featured Mount Rushmore, highlighting four influential presidents whose leadership helped shape the course of American history.
2nd Place – Ella Harrah
Harrah paid tribute to “Old Glory,” using the American flag as the focal point of her design. Her mural celebrated unity, patriotism, and the ideals represented by one of the nation’s most cherished symbols.
3rd Place – Samantha Strain
Strain’s mural depicted a colorful and festive design that captured the excitement surrounding the semiquincentennial celebration.
This year’s winning murals demonstrated not only artistic talent but also a thoughtful understanding of the symbols, people, landscapes, and values that define the American experience. Together, the artists created a vibrant visual tribute to America’s 250th anniversary and inspired meaningful reflection among festival attendees.
Community Members Join the Creative Process
This year’s event also invited the broader community to become part of the artistic experience. Local artist and Batesville High School Art Teacher Andrea Grimsley designed three interactive community chalk murals that festival attendees helped bring to life throughout the day.
The murals celebrated themes of nationalism, the American landscape, and Americana, providing a hands-on opportunity for participants of all ages to contribute to a collective work of art that reflected both our nation’s heritage and the community spirit that continues to shape its future.
These interactive murals reinforced the idea that shared experiences unite communities and how art brings people together to celebrate milestones, culture, and civic pride.
Community Partnerships Make Success Possible
The Ripley County Community Foundation extends heartfelt thanks to Andrea Grimsley for her creativity and dedication in designing the three community murals and inviting the public to take part in their creation.
